Staskunas: Bill is most comprehensive reform of DUI laws ever

Rep. Tony Staskunas said reforms included in the package before the Legislature today will lead to a "significant reduction" in drunken driving in Wisconsin.

Staskunas, D-West Allis, said the bill he and Sen. Jim Sullivan authored is the most comprehensive overhaul of drunken driving laws ever undertaken.

Staskunas said the bill balances punishment, prevention and treatment. And he said while the funding mechanism may not be perfect, the funding comes from offenders, as it should.

"I'm glad the taxpayers of the state are not the ones footing the bill," Staskunas said.

Staskunas said he recognizes that this isn't the last piece of legislation that will be needed to address drunken driving in Wisconsin.

"We will be back," he said. "That is not a threat. That is a promise. A call to action ... This issue is not going away. For too long the Legislature has not addressed this issue."
